Park Bench
So many people came here to find shelter from the heat. I labored in the 90º to 100º temperatures, but I was stripped of that sensation while I worked - almost as if I was the tree or sitting under it.
To paint on location is the only way for me! Done on Riverside in 1984 when the park benches along the river were made of wood.

Marianna's Tree
In front of my house is a Japanese Maple Tree, which my daughter looks at when she reads by her window.
The leaves block some of the strongest rays but still give some natural light. She loves looking at the tree from time to time, watching the limbs sway in the breeze. Maybe a little bird will come by to rest.

Annuals
As color met with canvas, an old man approached carrying a small cardboard box. Immediately, he spoke. “It’s so peaceful here among the flowers, but I am heartbroken. I’ve come here to bury these two small birds. They would come to our kitchen window where we would feed them. My wife and I looked forward for their arrival each morning. Then one day, we found them dead, and so I’m here.”
As his tears swelled, I said, “You’re not foolish. Bury them here while I paint these annuals. They will nourish the soil and will one day help to bring pleasure to this world again. I will not forget you, for someday, when I’m able to have an art show I will tell everyone of this precious moment!”

I Look Up At The Moon
Encompassing ideal thought and belief manifested in ancient Japanese art and poetry. It is a haiku expressed visually.
Originally painted on three panels. Inspiration came to me because bamboo grows along the river. An odd number of fireflies. And gentle clouds with river lines. Who’s looking at the moon? Is it the fireflies, the cricket, or you the viewer?
